Natural Disasters
It has been said that this peaceful country of the long white clouds and green hills could turn very quickly to something out of a horror movie. In reality it is vulnerable to most natural disasters, a lot of which have already happened before.
It is due to the undeniable fact that firstly the country is located virtually on top of the ring of fire of the Pacific, with the tectonic plates being constantly fighting either pulling or pushing. It could be construed like sitting on top of a war zone happening deep beneath our feet. The result of this fighting can be earthquakes, volcano eruptions, fault shifts, lahas, tsunamis, land slides, and avalanches, etc.

To add to the mix the latitudes in which the North and South Islands are located on the earth's surface also places New Zealand on the path of cyclones that come from both the Pacific and Antarctica. Here you will also find other national disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, snow storms, hail storms, lighting storms, and the inevitable floods that cost the country considerably, and for which you are not covered by Governmental insurance.
Then there are droughts and fires.
You don't need to worry, but you do need to be prepared, even though in New Zealand these disasters are rare.
We should also mention that New Zealand also has one of the best systems to monitor natural disasters in the world, however the infrustructure to cope with a major dissater in many areas such the hospital system is limited. Keep in mind that even with all the technology of today's modern age there will be times when mother nature will catch us completely by surprise.
